With your help we did it!

The Committee to Commemorate John Wilson is pleased to announce that, with the help of the greater Brookline community and John’s many admirers, we have raised the $100,000 necessary to purchase and install his inspirational bronze sculpture, Martin Luther King, Jr., in the lobby of Brookline Town Hall.

On Dec 11 the Brookline Select Board accepted the gift of $100,000 from the Brookline Community Foundation, which has collected donations on our behalf. Thank you so much for being a part of this momentous effort!

Please come to the Celebration of John Wilson and the Unveiling and Dedication of his sculpture at 3pm Sunday, January 27th, 2019, at Brookline Town Hall.

John W. Wilson, who was born in Roxbury in 1922 and died in Brookline in 2015, was a primary contributor to the development of the artist language and recognition of Afro-American art in the 20th century. more

In the 1980s, John Wilson received a commission to create a sculpture to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in a park in Buffalo, NY. Inspired by ancient stone Olmec heads he had seen in Mexico, he created an inspirational and evocative 8-foot high bronze portrait head of Dr. King. more

The goal of the Committee to Commemorate John Wilson is twofold: to tell everyone about the amazing art and life of John Wilson and to encourage everybody to contribute so we can purchase the sculpture of Dr. King and offer it as a gift to the Town. more
